Things to Consider when Buying an Automotive Battery Charger

Owning a portable automotive car battery charger is one of the best investments you can make for your vehicle. The charger controls your vehicles electrical system, and not only get you going if your battery is drained, but it can also help maintain the batteries of your offseason vehicles, such as motorcycles, RV’s and boats when they are not being used.

Since searching for a good, portable battery charger can be overwhelming if you are not an automotive geek, so we’ve included a few tips to get you started in your search for a good, solid battery charger which will get you up and running quickly, with the least hassle, as well as being cost effective.

Microprocessor – When you look for a car battery charger, look for a ‘smart’ one’, meaning a car battery charger that has a microprocessor. As a result, the battery charger will use a multi-phase charging cycle and will turn off when your battery hits capacity.

The main benefit of using a smart charger is that anyone can operate it without risk of overcharging the battery and damaging it. It also will come with a convenient, easy to read LCD digital display which will keep you up to date with the charging process.

Trickle Battery Charger or Float Battery Charger – Car battery chargers are either float or trickle. The float charger is perfect for most people as it automatically detects when your car battery is full so it stops the charge, which means you are never in danger of damaging your battery.

The float type battery charger senses the voltage level, and when it drops, starts charging up again. Unless the manufacturer installs certain precautions, the trickle type charger will keep charging the battery even if 100 percent full, which will damage your battery.

Compact and Portable – In truth, it seems people rarely need a jump start at home. Quite the contrary, usually when your battery runs out of juice, is when you are far away from home and need a quick jump start to get there.

Having a compact, lightweight and portable battery charger can make all the difference, as they are designed to be easy to handle, transport and hook up for all drivers. however, as these are smaller than large battery charger you may keep in your garage, still looking for one that can charge a fully dead battery.

What are Your Needs? – Deciding on exactly what you need from your battery charger means you will not pay extra for features you do not need or purchase one which does not do enough.

If you are searching for a battery which will maintain your seasonal vehicles such as marine, motorcycles, aircraft or classic cars, in perfect condition then you will choose a good quality, low cost, low current battery charger.

However, if you are looking for one to restore a dead or dying battery, then look for a fast, powerful car charger which has the features you need to keep your automotive vehicles in tip-top condition.

Versatility – When you are in the market for a small, compact and easy to handle car battery charger, one that you can handle with ease in any weather, versatility is a huge plus.

USB charging ports are important as you want to be able to maintain contact with family, friends, the motor club or a towing company, and to do so, you’ll not only need to be able to charge your battery but also your smartphones, tablets, or any other mobile device.

Versatility in battery types is quite important to many households, as there are often different vehicles with different type automotive batteries, so it can help you if you find a charger that handles wet, maintenance free, Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM), and gel batteries.

How to Use an Auto Battery Charger?

It happened, you are stalled and now you need to charge up your car battery. Before you start, get protective goggles and protective gloves, wear long sleeves, tie your hair back and remove jewelry or any bits of loose clothing like scarves.

I also encourage you to have a portable, rechargeable LED work lamp in your car, so even if you are stranded out in the dark, you can charge up using one of these portable lamps.

NOTE: These are only guidelines to give you a rough idea of how to charge your car’s battery from a charger. You are totally responsible for following the instructions in the owners manual that came with the car battery charger that you purchased. Each car battery charger is unique in its own way, so only use the manual that came with that unit.

Step 1: As you will be working on your car, it is a good idea to put your parking brake on, to prevent your car from accidentally moving while you are working on it. Open your hood and examine your battery for any signs of damage such as leaked acid or cracks.

If your battery is damaged, then do not touch it, do not connect your charger to it, unless you are skilled with automotive engineering, it is best to call a tow truck to have it towed to a certified mechanic.

Step 2: Take out your vehicle’s owners manual and locate the positive and negative terminals on your vehicle’s battery. The positive terminal will have a ‘+’, ‘P’ or ‘POS’, the negative terminal will have a ‘-‘, ‘N’, or ‘NEG’. Make sure your battery charger is off and unplugged and ground the car battery.

Most cars have a negative ground, so connect the positive charger clip to the positive terminal, positive charger clips are red, and negative charger clips are black, always connect the positive first.

Step 3: Next, take the negative charger and clip it to the cars a heavy gauge metal part of the frame or engine block. Never, under any circumstances clip it to fuel lines, sheet metal parts or your carburetor. Make sure it is as far from your battery as possible, by going as far away as the cables will allow.

Step 4: Make sure your car battery charger is still off and unplugged. Next, connect the battery charger just as it states in your battery charger manual. This is terribly important, as car battery chargers are unique and may have their own setup steps. Only plug the cord into a grounded outlet and flip it on when you are sure you have completed all previous steps correctly.

Step 5: Now just let your charger do its job, and under no circumstances are you to touch the charger clips while charging. If you do not have a car battery charger with a float mode, that automatically adjusts the amperage, be watchful you do not accidentally overcharge and damage the battery.

When the charge is complete, turn the charger off and unplug it from the outlet. Once unplugged, remove the charger clip you connected to the frame of your car, remove the clip connected to the battery posts, and start your car, there that’s it!

The Final Thought (Conclusion)

As complex as it may seem to those who have no knowledge of cars, manufacturers like the ones we have listed, have worked very hard to ensure that they have created products you will be able to operate easily, without the help of a mechanic. If you are still in doubt as to which battery charger to choose, here is a good hint: look up the product and find its owners manual online and study it, because if it is easy for you to read and understand, you’ll have no problem hooking it up on your own.

As always, we hope you have enjoyed our article on how to find the best automotive battery charger for you, and look forward to seeing you return and view more of our exciting, helpful, and top of the line products for your automotive needs.

  1. Md. Emamur Rashid

This charger works great…once you figure it out how to use it. The instructions are written in a way that is a bit difficult to absorb for some reason, at least for me (not to brag, but my IQ is over 150 so it’s not like I’m illiterate or something).
My car had been sitting in my driveway for months due to a persistent exhaust problem and the resulting lack of current registration stickers. Even though I would start the car and run it for a few minutes every week or so just to make sure the engine didnt suffer, the battery eventually died. And I mean really dead. Couldnt even lock the doors dead. I jumped it a few times with another car but even after being driven around for a half-hour or so the battery would be dead by the next morning.
So I bought this. When I first plugged it in I thought it didn’t work because it kept saying that my dead battery was fully charged. Then I discovered that there is a trick to charging a dead battery with this thing: you have to try using it to jump-start the car first. Then it will charge. If you have to use an extension cord, which is highly likely, you need to make sure it is the proper rating for this device. The instruction pamphlet has that info and trust me, it is important. This needs a pretty heavy extension cable to work properly. Like, we’re talking 16g up to 12g or heavier, depending on the length of the cable etc.
